Did you know that horses walk on their toenails. Over time, for swiftness of foot, the horse has had it’s toes fused together with only the nail of the middle toe forming the hoof on which it stands.
This holds true for it’s cousins, the asses and zebras of the family Equidae. As climate changed 55 million years ago, the ancestors of horses came onto open priarie and had to be able elude fast predators. The hoof helped in this and so has evolved over time. The family has some beautiful specimens like the mustangs of the American Priarie
