Humpback Breaching

We always wondered why Leviathans like these were so eager to jump out of the water. Breaching, it is called and has been long a thing of joy and wonder to many scientists. It also takes a lot of energy for such large beasts to jump out of water, which further added to the confusion.

Turns out, these expressive communicators are communicating with members of other pods by hurling themselves out of water. The thwack that it makes is like our tweets on social media, kind of!

Whales are known to use many forms of communication including high pitched whistles, rumbles, even tail fin smacks on the ocean surface. Perhaps, the next step is for us to try and decipher what they are saying. Wouldn’t that be something awesome.
